(1) Who the Hell is GOD?
Aug 25th, 2007 by Bob Burch
My friend Simon recently asked me if I would do an illustration for his blog “who the hell is god”. Because I’m a Christian I was a bit apprehensive at first, but when he explained to me that the blog was going to be a documented journey about his search for God, and reassured me that he would be respectful, I decided to do it. Though the title of the blog is deceiving I think it’ll bring readers. I also think that there isn’t anything more noble than searching to know the true God.I’ve been working on some sketches and concepts and so far have ended up pretty abstract. Making images of God or concepts about God that aren’t corny can be very difficult because God is so big. I ended up focusing on creation. Things that might make one think about God, who He is and what He is doing. The gray block is where the title would go and the small box in the lower right is space for navigation or a search bar. Please comment on the sketch. I’m going to try and use my blog to communicate with Simon in the comments section also. It should be cool to see what ends up happening with the piece. Weather it will change much or not. Check out Simon’s current blog beforeifoget.co.uk.

Great start, I have a feeling this will be really, great. Are you going to do full color?

Yeah, it’ll be full color when it’s finally done. It may need some more concept work first. Then when that’s a bit more nailed down I’ll start some color studies.

Very interesting so far there Bob. The first thing that really leaped out at me was the fish. As in “My word, that’s a big fish!”
I invisage that the title would be a little more prominant too. However there’s no real need to worry too much about that as we could fade out the illustration a little maybe?
I just asked my friend Jeffrey what he thought about when he saw the picture, he said, and forgive him for this, of the kind of art one sees in Chinese restaurants.
Though he assures me that is no bad thing as he “simply adores Chinese food.” (I’m picture the face on you as you read that! lol!)
Anyway. I like the direction thus far. I’ll chat you on iChat after the weekend as I am currently away in Wales and being antisocial doing this.

Yeah, maybe the fish is a bit big. After looking at the sketch a bit more it would be nice if the fish broke out of the frame too (not sure how you feel about that web wise, it might be cool though). I agree that the title should be pretty big.
As far as it looking Chinese, it’s actually Japanese inspired. I loosely base a lot of my work on Japanese wood block prints. Take a look at these posts. I wanted the illo to have a similar feel.
Anyway, I’ll talk to you online next time I see you there.

I think the fish breaking out of the frame is a good idea. However I’m not convinced that’s going to work so well for the format I’m going for. But so far it’s looking interesting. That’s what it needs to be. But hey, don’t make it too interesting will you, I want people to read the blog not just stare at your great work!

[…] In my last “Who the Hell is God” post I posted a rough concept sketch. After reading the comments from Simon and others I sketched out a new image with a smaller fish (about 40% smaller) and more room for the title. I also wanted to do something more with the landscape so I added some houses. I think they ad a nice human element that the image was lacking before. Simon wasn’t sure about the bleed but I left it in for now figuring the image can always be cropped. […]
